Make the Most of your Massage

Make the Most of Your Massage

Whether you have had many massage treatments in the past, or you are thinking about booking your first appointment, here are some tips to help you have the best experience possible.

Before you go to the clinic:

  • Shower - rinsing off any excess chlorine, perspiration, or environmental pollutants prevents them from being absorbed by the skin during your treatment

  • Hydrate - drinking plenty of water both before and after your massage can increase its effectiveness

  • Don’t eat a large meal immediately before your appointment - giving your body time to digest your meal will encourage maximum comfort and relaxation

  • Don’t go to your appointment on an empty stomach - the relaxing effect of massage therapy can lower blood sugar levels, and stimulates the digestive system, so having a light snack about an hour before your appointment can help the body maintain homeostasis

At the clinic:

  • Arrive on time - if you are rushed, it may take longer to settle in & relax

  • Give accurate, up-to-date health information

  • Advise of any allergies to oils, lotions, scents, etc

  • Outline your goals, point to any areas of pain, let your massage therapist know anything your are uncomfortable with - they are trained professionals here to provide a welcoming, safe, and comfortable environment for you

On the table:

  • Be as open and receptive to the process as possible

  • Remember to breathe - breathing helps facilitate both physical & mental relaxation (click HERE to learn about breathing exercises and/or Pranayama)

  • Relax your muscles and your mind

  • Communicate with your massage therapist - give feedback during your treatment.  If something is distracting, painful, or generally unpleasant it can always be adjusted

  • Give feedback on the amount of pressure, speed of hand movement, etc.  If anything seems improper, you have the right to ask the massage therapist to stop

  • Talk, or don’t talk - it’s up to you!  Some folks enjoy conversation during their massage while others prefer to stay quiet and completely unwind

  • Don’t be afraid to discuss any apprehensions or concerns - it is important you be as comfortable as possible during your treatment, and your RMT is dedicated to helping you feel at ease

After your massage:

  • Don’t get up too quickly - as the body works through and absorbs the effects of treatment, you may experience mild feelings of disorientation such as dizziness.  The tension and toxins released during massage have an effect on your system as a whole, so be gentle with yourself in the time that follows

  • If possible, allow for some open, quiet time following your massage

  • Hydrate - drink plenty of water to help eliminate toxins released & keep

  • Don’t do anything strenuous - give the body time to absorb and integrate your treatment

  • Be prepared to book another appointment - massage shows its greatest benefits over time.  Whether you’re working on rehabilitation of an injury or condition, or on general wellness and self-care, the effects of massage are cumulative.  With regular massage therapy, your body will feel better and respond more readily to care
