It’s easy to become overwhelmed with a wide variety of feelings during this period of uncertainty and isolation. Here are some some things we are doing around our house to stay healthy. This may be the perfect time to make your health a priority, and if you don’t know where to start, these tips could be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
Maintain a routine especially regarding circadian biology. Get lots of sleep. Go to bed on time (by 10 pm for us) and get up on time (by 7 pm for us). Don’t overdo screen time. Make sure to get early morning sun exposure and keep your evening/sleep time as dark as possible.
Eat regular meals. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at most. There is no healthy snack… Snacking is an emotional event created by the food industry. Eat when the sun is out, i.e. don’t snack at night. Avoid added sugar, vegetable oils, and refined grains. Prioritize protein, eat healthy fats, and minimize carbs (it seems those with metabolic issues have a more difficult time dealing with SARS CoV-2).
Get outside for sun and physical activity. I like a 10 minute walk at three times a day. Do some intermittent, brief, intense activity like lifting heavy things (this means something different for everyone) or moving fast. Don’t overdo it, as the immune system is depressed after intense activity.
Play lots. Stay connected and socialize via technology i.e. video calls, group messaging, etc. Social connections are very important for mental health. If you are in isolation by yourself, try to make it a daily habit of connecting with at least one other individual on a daily basis via online face-to-face programs or by the good ol’ fashioned telephone call.
I know this is not an easy time for you. We are hear for you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you are needing support. We are waiving any fees for telehealth services.
