In medical circles, storms like the one we had last weekend are known as “widow makers”. The first snow of the year, combined with the amount and high moisture content make it very dangerous for those who may have become de-conditioned to physical exercise. We aren’t even talking about spine health here folks, this is more important - heart health. Next storm, please make sure to follow these tips:
Warm up, go slowly at the start, don’t go from zero to a hundred in a split second
Break it up, try shovelling at various times during the storm, not at the end when the task seems impossible.
Give yourself a break. Take frequent rest breaks during shovelling so you don’t overdo it.
Pay attention to how your body feels during those breaks.
Don’t eat a heavy meal before or right after shovelling.
Use a small shovel to remove and a wide shovel to push. The act of lifting heavy snow can raise blood pressure acutely during the lift. It is safer to lift smaller amounts more times, than to lug a few huge shovelfuls of snow. Where possible, push the snow out of the way.
Invest in a snow blower, or pay a plow. I know it’s a huge expense, but considering we have winter four months a year, why not see it as an investment.
Learn the heart attack warning signs and listen to your body, but remember this: Even if you’re not sure it’s a heart attack, have it checked out (tell a doctor about your symptoms). Minutes matter! Fast action can save lives — maybe your own. Don’t to call 9-1-1.
